Kmart now sells a 3D dragon for $8. We print articulated dragons in our Lake Macquarie studio, so we get asked how they compare. Here is our honest take, plus what to check before you buy any 3D printed dragon.
I’m Josh, one half of Satrah 3D. Kate and I have been printing articulated dragons since 2022. When a $8 dragon turns up at Kmart, people fairly ask why ours cost more. This is the straight answer.

Why Quality Matters With 3D Printed Dragons
An articulated dragon is printed in one piece with the joints already formed. Done well, every segment swings freely and the thin parts hold up to play. Done badly, joints stick or rattle loose, and wings and tails snap.
We’ve seen 3D printed dragons on store shelves with broken wings and tails before anyone has even bought them. That’s a let down for the person who takes one home, and it gives 3D printing a bad name. It’s the main reason every dragon we make is checked before it’s packed and posted.
What to check before you buy any 3D printed dragon
- Every joint moves. Curl the tail gently. Each segment should swing freely without sticking or falling apart.
- The thin parts are intact. Wing tips, horns and tail tips break first. Look closely, especially through packaging.
- The print is clean. No stringy threads or blobs between segments.
- It’s the colour you want. With assorted stock you get what is there. Made to order means you pick.
- You know who to contact. If it arrives broken, can you get it replaced? Ours are covered: tell us within 2 days with a photo and we’ll replace or refund it.
When the Kmart Dragon Makes Sense
Party bags, a pocket money treat, or a first dragon to see whether your kid is into them. At $8 it’s hard to argue with, as long as you check it over before you leave the store.
When an Australian Made Dragon Makes Sense
- The colour matters: a favourite colour, one that matches a room, or one that fits a collection.
- It’s a proper gift: Christmas, a birthday, or a thank you that should feel considered.
- They want something more detailed: crystal wing, wolf and lunar designs, or a premium dragon with a second accent colour.
- You want a surprise: Mystery Dragon Eggs hide an articulated dragon inside a printed egg.
Our best seller last Christmas was the Crystal Wing Articulated Dragon, with Mystery Dragon Eggs close behind. See every dragon.
