How to Choose a
3D Printed Articulated Dragon
Baby or adult? Small desk companion or full-length display piece? Glow in the dark or galaxy silk? Here is everything you need to pick the right one.
We get a lot of questions along the lines of "which one should I get?" — and it is a fair question. Satrah 3D makes a lot of dragons, across a wide range of sizes, styles, and prices. If you are buying your first one, or picking a gift for someone else, the options can feel a bit overwhelming.
This guide cuts through it. We will explain what "articulated" actually means, walk through the size difference between baby and adult dragons, cover the full colour range, and give you a clear picture of which dragon suits which kind of buyer.
What "Articulated" Actually Means
Each dragon is printed as a series of individual segments — body, tail, legs, wings — that interlock during the printing process. No glue, no assembly required. The joints move freely straight out of the packaging.
You can flex the tail, pose the neck, curl the body into a loop, or just fidget with it while you think. The movement is part of the appeal. Some customers use them as desk fidgets; others display them in a posed position and do not move them much at all. Both are completely valid.
Baby Dragons vs Adult Dragons
The clearest way to split the range is by size. Baby dragons are compact, easy to hold and well-suited to gifting. Adult dragons are larger, more detailed, and built to be noticed.
| Type | Approx. length | Best for | Starting from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini / Pocket | Under 15 cm | Stocking stuffers, add-ons, desk fidgets, kids | $4 AUD |
| Baby Dragon | 20–35 cm | First purchase, gift under $25, compact display | $10 AUD |
| Adult Dragon | 40–70+ cm | Statement display, collector, gift that impresses | $29 AUD |
Within the adult range, size varies between models. The Crystal Dragon comes in small (45cm), medium (55cm) and large (62cm). The Imperial Dragon runs to 70cm. If you have a specific shelf or desk space in mind, check the product listing for exact dimensions before ordering.
- Buying for a child (older, supervised)? Baby dragon or mini. Compact, under $25, harder to get wrong.
- Buying for a teen or adult who likes fantasy? Crystal Dragon or Crystal Wing in a silk or glitter finish.
- Buying for a collector or display space? Imperial Dragon, Lunar Dragon, or Premium Crystal Wing.
- Not sure? A Mystery Dragon delivers a surprise colour — popular for birthdays.

Colour Options Explained
Most dragons are available in 38+ colour options, chosen at checkout. Here is what the finish types actually mean in practice.
Standard
Solid matte to satin finishes. Clean and classic. Works on any shelf or desk. Good if you want the shape of the dragon to do the talking.
Silk
A light-catching sheen somewhere between satin and metallic. Galaxy, Gemstone, Elixir and similar names are all silk finishes. They photograph well and pick up different tones depending on the light.
Glitter
Actual glitter particles in the filament. Under light they sparkle noticeably. Glitter Rainbow is consistently one of our top-selling colour choices across the whole range.
Glow in the Dark
Cream-white in daylight, glowing blue-green after light exposure. The Lunar Dragon is built around this finish. If you are buying for a bedroom display, it is a genuinely impressive piece after lights out.
Buying as a Gift
Dragons are one of our most gifted product categories. A few patterns have come through clearly after a few years of orders.
For older kids (supervised)
Baby Crystal Dragon or Hollow Dragon. Under $25, compact, and durable. Not appropriate for children under 3 due to small features on some models.
For teens and adults who like fantasy
The Crystal Dragon (three sizes) or the Crystal Wing in a silk or glitter finish. Big enough to make a real impression, without committing to a premium price point.
For collectors and serious display spaces
The Imperial Dragon, Lunar Dragon, or Premium Crystal Wing. These are the ones people photograph and post about.
For someone who already has dragons from us
The Mystery Dragon Egg delivers a surprise dragon in a surprise colour. Works well when the person already has a few and enjoys the collection growing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does articulated mean for a 3D printed dragon?
Articulated means the dragon is made up of individually printed segments — body, tail, limbs, wings — that interlock during printing. The joints move freely with no assembly required. You can flex, curl, and pose them straight out of the packaging.
What is the difference between a baby dragon and an adult dragon?
Baby dragons are typically 20–35cm. Adult dragons range from around 40cm to 70cm+, with more detailed features like larger wingspans, horns, and longer tails. Baby dragons are popular for gifting and first purchases; adult dragons are better suited to display and collecting.
Are the dragons safe for children?
Our dragons are printed in PLA and are not certified toys. They are best suited to older children and adults. Some models have small detachable features not appropriate for children under 3.
Can I choose the colour?
Yes. Most dragons are available in 38+ colour options including standard, silk, glitter, glow in the dark, and multicolour finishes. Colour is chosen at checkout. For a custom colour combination not listed, get in touch and we can discuss a quote.
How long does delivery take?
We print to order and dispatch within 2 to 3 business days. Standard Australia Post delivery applies after that. Free shipping on Australian orders over $100 AUD; flat rate $10 for standard orders.
Can I get a dragon printed in two colours?
The Premium Crystal Wing Dragon is printed with a primary and secondary colour as standard. For fully custom two-colour combinations on other models, contact us for a custom printing quote.
Do the joints loosen over time?
Fresh 3D printed joints can loosen slightly with regular handling. This is normal — most customers find the movement feels smoother and more satisfying the more they use it.
